Also known as the European Beech or Common Beech, the Pleached Beech Tree is a timeless and elegant choice for structured green screening. With its vibrant seasonal foliage, refined form, and exceptional leaf retention, it creates a formal living screen that delivers year-round impact, even in winter.
At Tree Heritage Nursery, our Pleached Beech Trees are expertly shaped and available in a range of head sizes and clear stem heights, providing ready-made privacy and structure for a variety of garden styles.
Growing Conditions
Beech trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soils, including chalk, loam, and clay. They prefer a sunny or lightly shaded position, and once established, are remarkably low-maintenance, resilient, and long-living. While not suitable for very wet or compacted ground, they adapt well to most UK garden conditions.
Where to Position It
Pleached Beech is perfect for creating elevated privacy, partitioning outdoor spaces, or softening boundaries in formal gardens, large terraces, and estate landscapes. Its smart framework and lush, leafy panels offer a beautiful alternative to walls or fencing, particularly when seasonal interest is desired.
Foliage, Flowers & Fruit
Beech features broad, wavy-edged leaves that emerge bright green in spring, mature to deep green in summer, and turn golden bronze in autumn. When pleached and pruned, many of the dry copper leaves are retained through winter, providing valuable year-round screening. In spring, small catkin-like flowers appear, followed by triangular beech nuts inside spiky husks, attractive to birds and woodland wildlife.
