The Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), also known as Mediterranean Cypress or Tuscan Cypress, is an iconic architectural tree prized for its slender, upright form and deep evergreen foliage. This classic conifer instantly brings a sense of elegance and formality to garden spaces, making it a favourite in Mediterranean-style gardens, grand avenues, and contemporary planting schemes.
At Tree Heritage Nursery, we supply Italian Cypress Standard Trees in the following sizes: 10–12 cm, 14–16 cm, and 18–20 cm.
Growing Conditions
The Italian Cypress thrives in well-drained soil, including chalk, loam, or sandy soil, and prefers full sun for best colour and growth. It is drought-tolerant once established, and best suited to sheltered or southern locations in the UK. It dislikes waterlogged or heavy clay soils, but is otherwise adaptable and resilient.
Where to Position It
Perfect for formal entrances, pathway borders, symmetrical planting, or as a statement feature in gravel or courtyard gardens, the Italian Cypress adds vertical drama and timeless structure. Use them in pairs to frame gateways or garden vistas, or plant in rows for a classic Italianate look.
Form, Foliage & Appeal
Italian Cypress trees grow in a naturally narrow, columnar shape, maintaining their slim profile with little pruning. Their rich green, scale-like foliage remains vibrant year-round and forms a dense, upright silhouette that provides instant height and contrast in the landscape.
