Product Information
Also known as English Holly, Common Holly, or European Holly, the Standard Holly Tree (Ilex aquifolium) is a classic evergreen with unmistakable character. Its glossy, deep green leaves and vibrant red berries make it a standout feature throughout the seasons, especially during the festive months.

At Tree Heritage Nursery, we offer this traditional favourite in a range of standard tree sizes to suit your space and needs: 10–12 cm, 14–16 cm, 18–20 cm.

Growing Conditions

This hardy species thrives in moist but well-drained soil, whether it's chalky, loamy, clay, or sandy, and prefers a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It does well in both full sun and partial shade, and once established, is remarkably tolerant of wind, cold, and urban conditions.

Where to Position It

Perfect as a focal point, a formal accent, or planted in a decorative container, the Standard Holly fits seamlessly into cottage, traditional, or contemporary gardens. For best berry production, plant in a sunny or partially sheltered spot and ensure a male plant is nearby to pollinate female trees.

Flowering, Berries & Leaves

In spring and summer, small white flowers attract bees and pollinators. These are followed in autumn and winter by clusters of ornamental red berries (on female trees), offering seasonal colour and vital food for birds. The evergreen, spiky-edged leaves stay vibrant all year, adding structure and texture to your garden.

Delivery — By Our Own Team

Standard and pleached trees are too tall for courier pallets, so our own team delivers them:

  • £55 — within 18.6 miles (30 km) of our Hertford nursery
  • £105 — 18.6–46.6 miles (30–75 km)
  • £250 — 46.6–205 miles (75–330 km)
  • £400 — 205–329 miles (330–530 km)

Oversized trees are delivered within a 4-week window and we’ll agree the date with you. Scotland or beyond 329 miles: please contact us for a quote before ordering. Select your distance band at checkout — we confirm by postcode before dispatch.

Plant Now or Reserve for Autumn

We deliver all year round — our container-grown stock can be planted in any season (summer planting just needs committed watering). Prefer to plant in autumn, when establishment is easiest? Order now and add a note at checkout — we’ll reserve your plants and deliver when you’re ready.

Planting & Aftercare

Every order includes our planting and establishment notes. The single biggest factor in success is water: new plants need generous, regular watering through their first two growing seasons. Follow the guide and your plants will establish strongly — and we’re on the end of the phone if you need us.

Why Tree Heritage

We’re a working nursery in Hertfordshire, not a reseller. Every plant is selected, grown on and quality-checked by our own team before it leaves the nursery.

Delivery charges are calculated at checkout based on the method, the specifics of your order, and your location.

Hedging & Multi-stem Trees (Pallet Delivery) :
Price is primarily based on the number of pallets required and your postcode/delivery zone.

Standard & Pleached Trees (Specialist Courier):
Price is based on distance from our nursery, product quantity, and product size (e.g., height/girth).

To keep your holly healthy, water it regularly during dry spells, especially in the first few years after planting. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and promote bushier growth. Apply a mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots in winter. With just a little care, your holly will thrive and provide year-round beauty and seasonal cheer.
