Also known as the Common or European Beech, the Fagus sylvatica is a majestic, deciduous tree known for its smooth grey bark, dense foliage, and stately form. A classic feature of grand landscapes and avenues, Beech makes a striking specimen tree or a formal structural element in both traditional and contemporary garden designs.
At Tree Heritage Nursery, we supply Beech standard trees in a selection of sizes: 10–12 cm, 14–16 cm, and 18–20 cm.
Growing Conditions
Beech thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soils, particularly chalky or loamy types, and prefers full sun or partial shade. While it dislikes waterlogged ground, it performs reliably in a range of conditions and is well-suited to both rural and urban planting schemes. Once established, it is low-maintenance and long-lived.
Where to Position It
Beech is perfect for planting as a specimen tree, along avenues, or in larger gardens and estates where its impressive canopy can be appreciated. It’s also popular for pleached or topiary forms due to its tolerance of pruning and ability to hold on to dry copper leaves through winter, offering seasonal screening.
Foliage, Flowers & Fruit
Beech trees feature wavy-edged, glossy green leaves that emerge fresh and light in spring, deepen through summer, and turn rich bronze and golden tones in autumn. In spring, small yellow-green flowers appear, followed by distinctive triangular nuts (beechnuts) inside prickly husks, an important food source for wildlife.

Planting & Aftercare
Every order includes our planting and establishment notes. The single biggest factor in success is water: new plants need generous, regular watering through their first two growing seasons. Follow the guide and your plants will establish strongly — and we’re on the end of the phone if you need us.
Why Tree Heritage
We’re a working nursery in Hertfordshire, not a reseller. Every plant is selected, grown on and quality-checked by our own team before it leaves the nursery.
