Product Information
Also known as Burkwood Osmanthus or simply Sweet Olive, Osmanthus burkwoodii is a compact, slow-growing evergreen hedge plant celebrated for its glossy foliage, dense structure, and heavenly scented flowers. This elegant shrub is perfect for creating low to medium-height hedges that are both ornamental and practical, adding a touch of luxury to formal and informal garden designs alike.

Growing Conditions

Sweet Olive thrives in well-drained soil including clay, loam, or sandy soils, and performs best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a sheltered position protected from cold winds and is particularly well-suited to urban gardens and mild regions. Once established, it’s tolerant of moderate drought and low-maintenance overall.

Where to Plant It

Ideal for decorative low borders, scented walkways, evergreen structure in mixed planting, or privacy screening near seating areas, Osmanthus burkwoodii adds refinement to courtyards, small gardens, and pathway edges. It can also be clipped into neat hedges or topiary balls for formal settings.

Foliage, Flowers & Fragrance

This hedge features small, leathery, dark green leaves similar in appearance to holly but without the sharpness. In spring, it produces clusters of tiny white flowers that release an intense, sweet, jasmine-like fragrance, attracting bees and pollinators. The foliage remains lush and attractive year-round.

Size & Growth

  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (10–20 cm per year)
  • Ultimate Height: Easily maintained at 1–2.5 metres
  • Spacing: 2–3 plants per metre
  • Time to Establish: 3–5 years for a dense hedge

Delivery

Pallet delivery £70 to most of mainland UK — FREE on orders over £500. One pallet carries up to 5 multi-stem trees or 15 hedging plants and the delivery price is the same however full it is, so it pays to fill your pallet. Kerbside delivery; we’ll contact you to arrange a convenient day. Scottish Highlands & Islands may carry a small surcharge — confirmed before dispatch.

Plant Now or Reserve for Autumn

We deliver all year round — our container-grown stock can be planted in any season (summer planting just needs committed watering). Prefer to plant in autumn, when establishment is easiest? Order now and add a note at checkout — we’ll reserve your plants and deliver when you’re ready.

Planting & Aftercare

Every order includes our planting and establishment notes. The single biggest factor in success is water: new plants need generous, regular watering through their first two growing seasons. Follow the guide and your plants will establish strongly — and we’re on the end of the phone if you need us.

Why Tree Heritage

We’re a working nursery in Hertfordshire, not a reseller. Every plant is selected, grown on and quality-checked by our own team before it leaves the nursery.

Delivery charges are calculated at checkout based on the method, the specifics of your order, and your location.

To care for your Sweet Olive hedge, water regularly during dry periods, especially in its first couple of years. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Apply mulch each spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage compact growth - Osmanthus responds well to trimming but doesn’t require frequent clipping. With minimal effort, it will provide a beautifully scented, evergreen hedge that enhances your garden all year long.
