Also known as Burkwood Osmanthus or simply Sweet Olive, Osmanthus burkwoodii is a compact, slow-growing evergreen hedge plant celebrated for its glossy foliage, dense structure, and heavenly scented flowers. This elegant shrub is perfect for creating low to medium-height hedges that are both ornamental and practical, adding a touch of luxury to formal and informal garden designs alike.
Growing Conditions
Sweet Olive thrives in well-drained soil including clay, loam, or sandy soils, and performs best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a sheltered position protected from cold winds and is particularly well-suited to urban gardens and mild regions. Once established, it’s tolerant of moderate drought and low-maintenance overall.
Where to Plant It
Ideal for decorative low borders, scented walkways, evergreen structure in mixed planting, or privacy screening near seating areas, Osmanthus burkwoodii adds refinement to courtyards, small gardens, and pathway edges. It can also be clipped into neat hedges or topiary balls for formal settings.
Foliage, Flowers & Fragrance
This hedge features small, leathery, dark green leaves similar in appearance to holly but without the sharpness. In spring, it produces clusters of tiny white flowers that release an intense, sweet, jasmine-like fragrance, attracting bees and pollinators. The foliage remains lush and attractive year-round.
