Also known as Japanese Cherry 'Kanzan', Kwanzan Cherry, or simply Kanzan Sakura, the Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' is one of the most admired flowering cherries. Celebrated for its abundant double pink blossoms and elegant form, this ornamental tree brings spectacular spring colour to gardens and landscapes.
At Tree Heritage Nursery, we supply Cherry Blossom 'Kanzan' standard trees in a range of sizes: 10–12 cm, 14–16 cm, and 18–20 cm.
Growing Conditions
Kanzan cherry thrives in moist but well-drained soil - whether chalky, sandy, loamy, or clay-based. It prefers a sunny, sheltered position, where it can produce the most prolific blooms. Though hardy and adaptable, it benefits from a spot with good air circulation and protection from harsh winds.
Where to Position It
Perfect for avenues, small lawns, front gardens, or as a focal point, Kanzan cherry offers stunning visual impact in both traditional and modern settings. It also works well in larger containers and urban gardens, thanks to its compact yet graceful growth.
Foliage, Flowers & Fruit
The real showstopper is its profusion of double pink blossoms in mid to late spring, creating a cloud-like effect against the sky. These flowers are lightly scented and attract pollinators. The young bronze foliage matures to a rich green in summer, then turns vibrant orange and red in autumn. Though not grown for fruit, the tree may occasionally produce small, inconspicuous cherries after flowering.
