The Japanese Maple ‘Atropurpureum’, also known as Purple Japanese Maple, is one of the most admired ornamental trees, prized for its deep burgundy foliage, graceful shape, and delicate branching. In multi-stem form, it becomes a sculptural showpiece, perfect for adding architectural elegance, soft movement, and intense colour to any garden setting.
At Tree Heritage Nursery, our Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ Multi-Stem Trees are carefully cultivated for balance and form, ideal for feature planting in both contemporary and traditional spaces.
Growing Conditions
This Japanese Maple prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils and thrives best in a sheltered position with partial shade. It benefits from protection against strong winds and harsh midday sun, which can scorch its finely cut leaves. Once established, it is resilient and long-lived.
Where to Position It
Ideal for courtyards, urban gardens, or woodland borders, the multi-stem Atropurpureum makes a striking feature in smaller spaces and container displays. Its compact size and elegant canopy lend themselves to Zen-inspired gardens, gravel beds, or reflective planting schemes where foliage colour and form take centre stage.
Foliage, Flowers & Form
This cultivar is known for its rich, reddish-purple, finely lobed leaves, which hold their colour well through summer before turning fiery red in autumn. The multi-stemmed structure offers year-round interest, with a graceful silhouette in winter. Small purple flowers appear in spring, followed by winged samaras (maple keys) in late summer, adding a delicate finishing touch.

Plant Now or Reserve for Autumn

Planting & Aftercare
Every order includes our planting and establishment notes. The single biggest factor in success is water: new plants need generous, regular watering through their first two growing seasons. Follow the guide and your plants will establish strongly — and we’re on the end of the phone if you need us.
Why Tree Heritage
We’re a working nursery in Hertfordshire, not a reseller. Every plant is selected, grown on and quality-checked by our own team before it leaves the nursery.
